How to connect to a MySQL Database Using PHP - ABCO Technology

ABCO Technology explains, I'd like to explain to our students on creating a config file, which is the first part of creating any application. I'll start from phpMyadmin. Connect to the phpmyadmin interface for MySQL and create a database along with the user. For this purpose we are going to assume that we are creating a blogtastic database for a web blog, and a user named blog_usr, with a password "password". You will obviously have your own credentials, If the MySQL database and the PHP Code is on the same server, then your host will be "localhost", or you will have to type the name or IP address of your database server.

After the database is created, using a simple HTML editor, create a config file, in which you will create variables for your site. These are variables that are going to be used throughout the site, and hence must be defined in the config.php file. This also makes the website more scalable, as in the future, if you change the server or the database, you will have to only make the changes in one place.

The most important point to remember is the fact that on every page of your site, where you need to retrieve information from the database, or send information to the database, it is required to connect to the database at the very top.

So here's a sample config.php file, that you must prepare at the start of every application. Once the file is prepared, include this file at the top of every page using the include("config.php") or require ("config.php") function. For most of you that do not know this, abco technology would like to let you know that within Windows Vista and Windows 7 there is a hidden administrator account. One can activate the administrator account, but be careful, because you could seriously kill your windows, if you don't know what your doing.

If for whatever reason you must login Windows Vista with the Administrator account this guide will show you how it’s done.

Note: If you’re trying to stop User Access Control (UAC) popups when you change settings or install software you should try disabling User Access Control before logging in as Administrator.
Warning: Running as Administrator in Windows Vista bypasses all security (UAC) and is NOT recommended. If you decide to use the Administrator account don’t complain when you start having problems.

Enable the Administrator Account

Open the command prompt with Administrative privileges by opening the Start Menu, and typing cmd in the search box, and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter or click the Start orb, All Programs, Accessories, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
Type the following in the command prompt and press Enter after:net user administrator /active:yes
Restart your computer and logon as Administrator.

Note: You might want to set a password for the administrator’s account for at least a little protection.

Disable the Administrative Account

To disable the Administrative account run the Net User command demonstrated above while logged on an account with administrative privileges but not as the Administrator account and replace yes with no.

Page Redirection Using PHP updated

Earlier, I had asked for the entry level class of PHP students to create a Login Form and if the password is correct the user should be redirected to a members page or else the users should be redirected to the home page. Generally we compare the login input from the user to the actual stored username and password in the database for authentication. However, in this particular section, I'm going to hard code the password through a variable for learning purposes only. The new thing to learn for beginners is how the form and the results can be coded on the same page, using $_SERVER[ 'SCRIPT_NAME ' ] system global. Here's the code for this below:

One of the most interesting things of PHP is that it can be used on different types of operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Unix variants, RISC OS, Mac OS X, Linux and several others. CompTIA is a non-profit trade association for IT professionals, as well as manufacturers, distributors, resellers, and educational institutions. It provides a wide range of vendor-neutral IT certifications. The most well known is the CompTIA A+ certification for computer support technicians. It proves competence in areas, such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting.

This is part of the certification track for IT companies, such as Microsoft, HP, Cisco and Novell. Others including CompuCom and Ricoh have made A+ certification mandatory for service technicians. Two exams are necessary to be certified:

CompTIA A+ Practical Application is an extension A+ Essentials with a hands-on orientation focused on scenarios in which troubleshooting and tools must be applied to resolve problems.

“A+ continues to be a workhorse, it just keeps growing,” said Erdle. “It validates that an individual has a solid, foundation-level understanding of computing and networking basics.”

The same is true, he said, for a couple of other CompTIA certs – Network+ and Security+, which continue to be in demand.

CompTIA Network+ deals with managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic network infrastructure. Since its introduction in 1999, more than 235,000 people have completed it. Certification Uncertainty: Vendor Neutral or One from the Big Guys?

As technology professionals move forward in their careers, many face the question of which developer certifications to pursue. One key question to answer is whether or not to go after a vendor-specific or vendor-neutral certification. Vendor-specific certifications cover specific developer technologies, products, or software platforms and are focused on giving expertise in a specific tool. By contrast, vendor-neutral certifications deal with best practices and concepts in a particular area of development such as security or project management.

Which type of certification is best is an open question--and one to which there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best certification path for career advancement varies from individual to individual.

Developer Certifications for Beginners

The options are broad--and in a sense, the choices, more difficult--for developers who are looking to break into the field. Some industry insiders suggest vendor-neutral certifications are best for developers who are looking to gain broad knowledge in the field and shouldn't limit potential career options by opting for vendor-specific certifications.

Others cite the value of having specific certifications on a resume, and suggest new developers figure out which certifications are in demand at the companies or positions to which they are applying, and focus on gaining those credentials.

Vendor Certifications for Industry Veterans

For professionals with some experience in the industry, the choices may be easier. Developers who are looking to advance within their current careers should look to build on previous certifications and work experience. For those who are working with a particular software or in a particular area of the tech field, it may make sense to get a vendor specific certification (Cisco, Red Hat, Microsoft, Sun/Oracle Java, ColdFusion). However, some developers may work on many different systems, making vendor-neutral certifications a good option.

The CompTIA A+ certification provides a well-recognized foundation for a devloper's skill set and resume, but few have the A+ and only the A+. Many developers go on to earn higher CompTIA certifications, or specialize in the vendor's offerings.

In the Linux area, some prefer the CompTIA certifications, with their broad overview, while others swear by specific Linux distributions such as Red Hat.

Vendor-Specific or Vendor-Neutral Certification: Making the Decision

For some, the choice of certification comes down to cost in terms of both money and time. Red Hat's vendor-specific certifications are notoriously expensive, require study time, and have a high failure rate. Of course, this makes these certifications all the more valuable and impressive to current and potential employers.

In contrast, CompTIA's vendor-neutral exams are multiple choice and cost a lot less money. Many of these, such as A+ and Linux+, are seen as the foundation of a resume, the first of several certifications developers want to take. Microsoft certifications are in the middle in terms of difficulty and cost.

A recent list of the 10 best certifications for 2010 by TechRepublic contained a mix of vendor-specific and vendor-netural certifications, suggesting that the industry as a whole doesn't have a strong preference for one type of certification or another. The "best" certifications really depend on what's right for the individual--certifications that meet the specific needs of an employer or fill certain holes on a resume are solid choices for developers.

· companies that advocated certification reported 49% less downtime than those that did not

· the costs of certification were repaid in fewer than nine months by the savings from increased effectiveness in the majority of companies surveyed

1. Programming and Application Development

About 47% of the survey respondents who said they plan to hire IT professionals in the next year will be looking for people with programming or application development skills. Moreover, Monster.com reports that three quarters of 245 HR managers and recruiters it surveyed in May plan to hire IT staffers with applications expertise by the end of this year.

"Those skills are separate from enterprise business applications," says David Foote, CEO and chief research officer at Foote Partners LLC in Vero Beach, Fla. In this volatile market, companies need to quickly reposition, as well as use IT to grow the business through new products and innovation. So "RAD, rapid programming and agile programming seem to be coming back. Companies are starting to increase some of their pay [in these areas], which means they're looking for more capabilities in their companies," he says.

2. Project Management

Kathleen Kay has put project managers at the top of her 2011 hiring list at Comerica Bank. With some 140 IT projects on the schedule, she will need people to oversee Web and mobile initiatives, a treasury management product rollout and a legacy applications refresh, among other efforts.The Dallas-based bank will fill those needs by hiring new people and retraining existing employees. "

We are very passionate about investing in our people and making sure they stay up to speed on skills with emerging technologies," says Kay, senior vice president of business technology services.People with project management skills will be sought by 43% of Computerworld's survey respondents who plan to make new hires, and by more than half of those polled by Monster.com.

3. Help Desk/Technical Support

Only 20% of Microsoft customers had converted to Windows 7 as of July 2010, according to Microsoft. "That leaves 80%. They have to move over. It's not a matter of choice," Willmer says. That may be one reason why help desk and technical support skills will be high-priority in 2011 for 42% of survey-takers who are hiring.

What's more, major conversions like those in the health care arena, driven by the EHR mandate, require a lot of help desk support for users. "These aren't just people doing password resets. They're probably technically savvy as well as having that health care background," Willmer adds.

4. Networking

Networking skills are in demand among 38% of Computerworld survey respondents who said they're hiring. And those jobs were identified as the most challenging to fill in a Robert Half Technology survey of 1,400 CIOs.

"Networking is closely tied to virtualization," says Willmer. "Finding somebody with that virtualization experience and the ability to convert nonvirtual environments into virtual environments probably is the biggest reason" some networking skills are hard to find.

5. Security

"Security is the only area of certified IT skills that has never had a negative quarter throughout this entire recession," Foote says. "We've never had a three-month period with a loss or decline in premiums for these people." Demand is being driven by regulatory compliance needs and by customer demand for tools with built-in security features.Valuable security skills include expertise in identity and access management, threat and vulnerability assessment, encryption, data loss prevention, incident analysis, governance, compliance and auditing, biometrics, Web content filtering, safeguards for voice-over-IP systems and e-discovery support for litigation.

6. Data Center

Of the Computerworld survey respondents who will be hiring in the next year, some 21% said that data center skills, including storage experience, will be in top demand.

"Storage is becoming more important as we go to network-attached storage [and storage-area networks]," says Suzanne Gordon, CIO at SAS Institute Inc. in Cary, N.C. Finding people with expertise in particular storage areas is important, she says, "but they should also be able to step back and look at it strategically: Are we putting the right things in the right places, and spending the right amount of money for safety and backup of the different types of data?"

7. Web 2.0

IT workers with next-generation Web skills will also be sought-after in 2011, according to 17% of Computerworld's respondents who plan to add new staffers in the next year. Hot Web 2.0 skills include expertise in Adobe Flex, JavaScript, Adobe Flash, AJAX and JavaScript Object Notation. In the financial services industry, for example, "Web and mobile products are huge," says Comerica's Kay. "We have several projects ongoing that are geared around proving further Web and mobile functionality."

8. Telecommunications

At Palmetto Health in Columbia, S.C., Michelle Edwards wants to hire staff with skills in unified communications. The health care provider is seeking people who can design an infrastructure and integrate various communications tools, including instant messaging, IP phones and remote access.

"In a hospital, you have urgent needs for patient care, on-call needs and remote needs. We want to make sure we understand all those needs," as well as the security issues around those communications devices, says Edwards, senior vice president and CIO.

Some 16% of Computerworld's survey-takers who plan to hire will be looking for telecommunications skills into 2011.

9. Business Intelligence

As data proliferates and IT departments look for ways to contribute to the company's profitability, business intelligence skills will be highly sought-after in 2011, according to 13% of survey respondents.

Palmetto Health is using an EHR system and staffers have been "very good about putting information in, but we haven't done as well taking that data and making it usable," Edwards says. "We're being forced to do a better job with presenting the information that we're capturing" and sharing it through statewide health information exchange networks, she adds.

10. Collaboration Architecture

Collaboration architecture expertise is high on Campbell Soup Co.'s list of hot skills, says Donna Braunschweig, senior director of IT, enterprise portfolio and strategy. The company constantly looks at "how we can help the end-user experience be better by understanding how things like portals, Web and audio can integrate, and what does that need to look like to be able to have better collaboration across the company?" she says. While most of Campbell's collaboration tools are hosted offerings from service providers, Braunschweig says she still needs employees who can manage those vendors and understand the technology.

11. Business Acumen and Communication Skills

You won't find this in any IT job titles, but most companies in 2011 will seek IT employees who understand the business and can communicate technical concepts to business units and customers.

Campbell requires IT employees to have four types of competencies: business and financial acumen, functional depth, leadership skills and a global mind-set. "Sometimes people think of IT as just technical skills, and it's not," Braunschweig says. At HealthAlliance, Thompson recruits IT staffers who can communicate well both orally and in writing. "I also want to have a reference of someone who knows how you speak about IT issues to people who are not computer-savvy," she adds. Overall, the outlook for 2011 remains volatile, and IT groups will need workers whose skills can help them adapt to rapidly changing market conditions. But as IT units move from a support role to a profitability model, "now they are able to move more quickly," Foote says. "I don't think the [IT] world is ever going to return to what it was in 2008, but it's a very positive thing."

Money:

Median annual earnings for network systems and data communication analysts were $73,250 in 2009. The lowest paid 10 percent made less than $43,000, while the highest paid 10 percent made more than $116,000.

Upward mobility:

You might aim to work your way up into managerial and project leadership roles. Many network architects with advanced degrees move into academia. You'll likely want to keep your technical skills up to date with training and continual education.

Activity level:

Low. This job requires a great deal of time spent in front of a computer. Installing hardware and software devices might get you on your feet a bit.

Stress level:

By controlling the access and security, helping track the changes, and supplying a place on the network where collaborators can discuss ideas, a server allows collaboration to focus on the exchange of ideas and the creation of information, rather than the transporting, tracking, and storing of documents and files.

4. Centralized Data Protection

Small businesses that use peer-to-peer networks to store and share information are relying on the security of individual PCs in the organization. Using a server-based network, on the other hand, provides a secure repository for information and helps keep the entire network secure.

Data protection on a server-based network starts with user accounts, controlled by an administrator, that allow users to access the network, applications, and information. User accounts can be set to allow different levels of access, so users can only access the information they really need.

Like PCs and laptops, servers need to be defended from malicious attack. But servers can also decide which PCs, laptops, and devices can access the network. Machines that don’t meet the security bar set for the network can be denied access.

Protecting the data on the server is important because it’s often the most sensitive data in the business. Communications with customers, suppliers, and partners; information about products and services; and sensitive information about customers, including social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, and credit card information all need to be protected to help ensure the trust and loyalty of all parties involved. Putting this information on a secure server reduces the attack surface exposed to hackers and malware.

Centralized information is easier to protect that data that’s scattered among different PCs and storage devices. A server helps small businesses reduce their attack surface and protect their company’s information by keeping it secure and available only to users who need to access it.

5. Easier IT Management

For all of the ways computers and the Internet make it easier for small businesses to level the playing field and grow their business, PCs and laptops still require a lot of time and resources for maintenance.

Smart small businesses recognize that to run efficiently and securely, their applications need to be up to date with patches and security fixes. Applications still need to be installed on new machines, for new employees, or rolled out as they are introduced; machines need to be scanned for malware and viruses; and tech support needs to be available when there are problems.

All of these scenarios can be accomplished more efficiently with a server, especially when the small business doesn’t have a full-time IT person.

Consider the alternatives: desk-side visits for tech support and software installations, which take up valuable time and resources and increase downtime for affected employees, and relying on employees to conduct their own virus scans, and patch downloads and installations.

A server-based network can allow applications, patches, and updates to be installed remotely by an administrator. It can also allow an administrator to remotely take control of a PC to fix technical problems or install software.

Small businesses shouldn’t be worried about uptime and PC maintenance because these tasks detract from the core business. Easier IT management using a server-based network allows small businesses to make the most of their technical support resources, decreases downtime, and increases the safety of the network and information.

Small businesses don’t have the luxury of time or resources and need to make the most of what’s available to them. The workplace is not what it was five years ago. Neither is the job hunt. ABCO Technology would like to give people a few hints on resume building.
The most successful candidates are those who are ready and willing to adapt to a changing landscape. But it doesn’t matter how ready you are for the modern workplace if your resume’s straight out of 1994.

And sometimes, it’s the most minute details that make all the difference.

Does your resumé speak to the modern hiring manager? Or does it need a serious makeover?
Your resumé might be passé if… Please review these 5 tips. For more information you can definitely contact ABCO Technology!

#1: You’ve forced it to fit onto one page

You’ve reduced your font size to eight, eliminated margins altogether and left out key information about yourself, all to conform to that age-old “one page resumé” rule. Big mistake. After all, would a recent college grad really need the same amount of resumé real estate as someone who’s been in the workforce for 20 years? Of course not.

Don’t get me wrong: Your resumé should be concise. Recruiters are busy people – they don’t have time or the patience for long-winded career chronologies. But if your experience warrants two pages, by all means, don’t limit yourself to one.

#2: You list an objective

Of course you’re looking to gain more experience in the field/sector/type of company to which you’re applying. Your interest in the job implies that. Do you really need to say it at the very top of your resume?
At this point in the selection process, hiring managers are far more interested in what you can do for them than what they can do for you.
If you want to explain why you’re applying for the job, say so in your cover letter. Resume space is far too valuable to waste on information that is both redundant and inconsequential.
#3: You write “References available upon request” at the bottom

Once again, a waste of valuable space. Do you really need to say so? The hiring manager can only assume that if they ask you for references, you’ll provide them. What, are you going to say “no?”
Instead, prepare a list of references with contact details and your relationship to each. Hold onto it until you’re further along in the selection process — you don’t want to annoy your referees with repeated contact by employers who are less than serious about you. Most respectable employers wouldn’t bother to contact a reference until they are fully ready to make you an offer.

#4: You attach it to your email as a Word document

While you’re unlikely to be penalized for emailing a Word document, there’s a lot to be said for converting it to a PDF before sending.
A PDF document just looks neater. And even if you’ve gone crazy with the formatting, it will show up correctly on the hiring manager’s computer no matter what their settings, Word version, or font inventory. Besides, do you really want those squiggly red lines showing up under your former company’s name?
Stick to PDF. It’s the only surefire way to display your resumé exactly as you intended it.

#5: You list every job you’ve ever had in chronological order

In the olden days, the person with the most experience got the job.
Nowadays, the person who’s most talented, has the most relevant skill set, and has proven to be most valuable to his or her former employers gets the job.
If you want to be that person, make sure your resumé says so. Don’t list jobs that are irrelevant to the one you’re applying for just to fill up space. Instead, expand on the jobs that are relevant. Focus on measurable achievements in each role as opposed to a play-by-play of your daily responsibilities.

It is important for every web designer to design the layout and the content using CSS for more efficiency. You need to ensure that the content on your site is properly formatted. Design an Information Center Page. You should start with a banner of the site, providing information about the city of Los Angeles, its temperature during various seasons. In addition to this, include copyright information, along with a Privacy Policy link on the site. Please ensure that the files contain proper HTML markup tags. Include other information content on the site for new visitors.

In addition to the home and information page, include upcoming events on the events page. Ensure that proper navigation is setup to ensure that information is easily accessible for the site visitors.

Often students at ABCO Technology enrolled in the CIW Program wonder how to start your own business, and abvoe all how to get started. I thought occassionally, it would be a great idea to give some tips and pointers about getting started with your own web design / graphic design business. Now before we get into some good tips, I'd like to inform everone that the training that you receive in classroom is the key to your success. As students know that all programs at ABCO Technology CIW Training are designed to give students the hands-on approach. Now, it also then becomes the responsibility of the student to spend some time at home, and complete the classwork and homework asssigned to the student. This would be the first step in preparing yourself to become a professional.

Initially, after you have developed the skills, there are a few preparation steps that you will have to do in order to further your business.

How to display date and year on a web page using JavaScript - Project level Basic"

Last week, I had requested a project for students to display the date using the date object in JavaScript, on an order details page. Here is the solution to the project:

In the .js file or the head script stream, enter the following code-

1> orddate = new Date();
2> dispdate = orddate.getMonth() + 1 + "-" + orddate.getDate() + "-" + orddate.getYear();

Further in the body stream of the html file the date can be displayed using the DOM innerHTML =+ dispdate or using the document.write method.

Addition: With the document.write method a table is being created displaying the order date. This can be in the init function of the js file. The code is as follows

Assuming that you have an Online Order form, and as your customers are placing the order, they're not sure whether they have been accepted or not. The sales tema wants you to provide an acknowledgement that displays the order date and delivery status.

How to develop object Heirarchy in JavaScript

The window object is at the top of the client-side JavaScript Object Heirarchy. It is an object representing the browser window. All client-side JavaScript objects exist as properties of the Window Object. Core and server-side objcts are not part of the Window Heirarchy. When you represent the property of an object, you need to use a dotted notation reference. For eg. object.property. Each object has propterties, methods and events. However, with the Window object, the script can interpret without the window portion of the notation. Hence window.status and status will be treated equally.

This is the season of parties and events. We meet different people and vendors and business contacts. Here are three tips to keep in mind as we attend the events and parties.

1. Make an appearance. Go to their page to offer a rating, follow them, clip their coupons, and read their story. Leave a comment on a blog or like them on Facebook.

2. Be a helper. Take a minute to introduce yourself on a Talk to Me, or offer to be of help. (Don't leave an advertisement or link.) Leave relevant, fresh content on their page to help increase their visibility to other merchants and consumers.

3. Say thanks! When you leave content on another merchants page, you establish yourself as a contributing member of the community. You've just helped yourself! And when new merchants inevitably return the favor of reviews and comments- reach out, say thanks, and continue the cycle.

These are just small tips to keep in mind.

How to Create Nested tables in HTML - ABCO Technology

Tables are an important part of HTML and the Web. The table tag in HTML is compatible with all browsers and is better with the search engines. As a result, tables are widely used to create layouts of web pages for content.
